Michael Sherling, MD, MBA

Chief Medical Officer & Co-founder

Dr. Michael Sherling is the Chief Medical Officer and Co-founder of Modernizing Medicine. In 2014, Michael, along with his co-founder, Dan Cane, received the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership in Healthcare Award. Michael is
responsible for the development and growth of Modernizing Medicine’s dermatology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, otolaryngology, urology and rheumatology verticals. He oversees product management in electronic health records, practice management, analytics, telemedicine and pathology. With Dan Cane, he has developed novel software solutions for MIPS, ICD-10 and PQRS automation. Additionally, he is developing new products in real world effectiveness research, including disease-based registries, and retrospective and prospective studies.
Under his leadership, Modernizing Medicine has established a user base of over 10,000 providers and raised over $318 million in capital.
Michael is a dynamic speaker and has had the honor of speaking at the 2015 Health 2.0 Conference’s “Tools to Fix the Clinical User Experience” and the 2016 Dermatology Entrepreneurship Conference.
Michael has been a practicing dermatologist since 2006. He is currently practicing in a comprehensive skin care dermatology group in Palm Beach County, Florida. Michael is board certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Prior to relocating to Florida, he was the Associate Director of Laser Medicine and Skin Health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and served as the Associate Residency Program Director for Harvard Medical School’s Department of Dermatology. He has several publications in peer reviewed medical literature.
Michael obtained his BS in Biology at Brown University with honors in 1996, his MD from Yale School of Medicine with honors in 2002, and his MBA from Yale School of Management in 2002. He received his clinical training at Harvard Medical School, where he served as chief resident in dermatology.

Brad Rennick

Senior Vice President of Customer Success

Brad Rennick serves as the Senior Vice President of Customer Success for Modernizing Medicine. He brings over twenty years of enterprise B2B relationship management, complex solutions delivery, technical support and consultative
sales experience to lead Modernizing Medicine's Client Services organization. Since joining Modernizing Medicine in 2011, Brad has focused on helping clients transform and optimize their medical practices and patient experiences through the adoption and support of the company’s specialty-specific suite of solutions. Under his leadership, the customer success team encompasses all areas of the customer journey including: On-boarding and Training, Technical Support, Education and Communication, Technology Services, Business Consulting, Client Engagement and Renewal teams. The team’s core focus stems from helping clients achieve their business goals through product, service and relationship development. Responsible for over 100,000 users across multiple medical specialties, his team maintains industry leading Client Satisfaction, Net Promoter Scores and Client Retention. Brad leads vast areas of employee, business and client integration to ensure a positive and timely transitional experience.

Brad drives Modernizing Medicine’s core belief of “client delight” by helping to ensure it resonates within the entire fabric of Modernizing Medicine’s operations and helps lead key company decisions. In December 2017, the Customer Success team was recognized as the Customer Success Team of the Year by the SIIA’s CODiE Awards.

Prior to joining Modernizing Medicine, Brad was Director of Enterprise Account Management for Campus Management Corp. (CMC), an award-winning leader in postsecondary education student information systems and CRM solutions. During his five year tenure, Brad was instrumental in leading CMC's key accounts strategy and relationship management, out performing new and recurring revenue, retention and customer referenceability goals. He also played a pivotal role in the corporate and customer integration of Talisma CRM post acquisition.

Prior to CMC, Brad spent seven years in Senior Account Management and Sales roles in South Florida and Chicago based tech consulting and search firms. Earlier in his career, he spent three years in Project Management and Training for Micros Systems, a global point-of-sale hospitality software. Brad graduated from College of Dupage located in Wheaton, Ill.

Joe Harpaz

Joe Harpaz serves as President and Chief Operating Officer of Modernizing Medicine. In his role, Joe leads growth and scale at Modernizing Medicine as the company aims to deliver best in class product and customer experience to make a true
difference in healthcare tech.

Joe has over 20 years of experience in building and leading high growth B2B software businesses that operate in complex and regulated industries. He’s known for his ability to lead and inspire large organizations while driving innovation and growth at scale.

Prior to Modernizing Medicine, Joe spent over a decade at Thomson Reuters and was behind the vision, strategy, and leadership of the highest growth business in the company. As Managing Director of the Corporate Market, Joe led the industry leading ONESOURCE™ corporate tax technology business with nearly $600M in global revenues. Through Joe’s leadership, ONESOURCE partnered with major software vendors including NetSuite, Oracle, SAP, Microsoft amongst others and is implemented by experts at Deloitte, KPMG, PWC, E&Y as well many global system integrators and regional consultancies.

Earlier in his career, Joe founded Immediatech and the GoFileRoom™ cloud workflow solution and was recognized as an industry innovator multiple times in Accounting Technology’s “40 under 40.” Acquired by Thomson Reuters in 2005, GoFileRoom™ is utilized by the leading professional services firms in the industry and was the first true web based multi-tenant platform for managing workflow and document management for accounting firms. Joe has also served on the board of a digital healthcare company focused on quality metrics and workflow solutions for medical imaging providers and payers, which was acquired in 2017.

Tim Sayed, MD, MBA, FACS

President, Tim Sayed MD, P.C.

Dr. Sayed is a double board-certified plastic surgeon. As the former Medical Director of EMA Plastic Surgery with Modernizing Medicine, he helped build content for ModMed's top-ranked plastic surgery product. He also led user experience
and clinical analytics development with Interpreta, a San Diego-based healthcare platform. An avid technologist, Dr. Sayed leverages numerous digital tools for the consultative and patient engagement processes in his southern California and south Florida practices. Dr. Sayed is active in leadership in ASPS and ASAPS, and serves as a consultant to several startups in the digital health and medical device space. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences from Berkeley, his MD from UCSF, and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Dr. Sayed trained in surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in plastic surgery at UCSF with notable leaders in the plastic surgery specialty.

John I Allen, MD, MBA, AGAF

Dr. Allen completed internal medicine and gastroenterology training at the University of Minnesota. He then helped build Minnesota Gastroenterology and worked with leadership at Allina Health. He currently chairs the
Quality Committee of Allina Health and is on their Board of Directors. In April 2013, he left community practice to become clinical chief of digestive diseases at Yale University School of Medicine and then the University of Michigan School of Medicine. He was President of the AGA from 2014-2015 and is currently Editor in Chief of GI and Hepatology News (the official news publication of the AGA).

Jonathan Kaplan, MD, MPH

San Francisco Plastic Surgeon

Dr. Jonathan Kaplan, a board certified plastic surgeon originally from Alexandria, LA is proud to call San Francisco home. After completing his plastic surgery fellowship at the world-renowned
Cleveland Clinic where he was trained by the same team that performed the first US face transplant, he practiced in Baton Rouge, Louisiana for six years.

James A. Turner, Jr, MBA, MHA

CEO of Indianapolis Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Inc

Mr. Turner assumed the duties of the position of Chief Executive Office of Indianapolis Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Inc (IGH) in February, 2010. He is responsible for directing the
business operations of both the for-profit IGH Corporation and The Endoscopy Center at St. Francis, an outpatient ambulatory surgical center which is a joint venture with Franciscan Health Alliance and the physicians of Indianapolis Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This multi-specialty group is the largest GI group in the state of Indiana.

Jim has over 35 years of experience in both major hospital systems as well as several major independent medical groups ranging in size from 15 to 330 doctors.

He also has significant experience in providing leadership in the areas of trauma and emergency medicine administration (Level I) as well as in specialty institutes (heart and lung, orthopedic, neurosurgical, eye institutes and cancer centers). He has worked with several hospital-based ambulance services as well as helicopter and fixed wing medical aviation programs and has a strong background in developing telemedicine networks between the Unites States Army and major medical systems.

Jim is 33 year military veteran and is a retired Lieutenant Colonel who is proud to have four (4) children associated with the military.

Eric Worthan, MHA

CEO of Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center

Mr. Worthan joined Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center in 2007 as Chief Executive Officer. He has spent his career developing robust business strategies for physician organizations, and has
published numerous articles and spoken on topics related to physician business optimization and national healthcare trends.

Prior to joining Panorama, Mr. Worthan co-founded a consulting, practice management, and third party medical billing firm in 1998. He sold his interest in the firm back to his other partners prior to joining POSC. Mr. Worthan also served as a Regional General Manager for Medaphis Physician Services Corporation, responsible for operations over a multi-state area before incubating his physician services firm. While at Medaphis, Mr. Worthan was honored with inclusion into the Chairman’s Club, a recognition given to select high performers. He graduated from Rockhurst College with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, and went on to obtain his Master’s in Health Services Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Thomas Friermood, MD

Thomas G. Friermood, MD is President of Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center. He completed his medical degree at Creighton University in Nebraska, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega
Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California at Davis.

Dr. Friermood no longer performs orthopedic surgery but has 30 years of experience in diagnosing complex orthopedic problems. He also evaluates and treats acute orthopedic problems. If surgery is needed for your problem, Dr. Friermood will refer you to a surgeon who can best take care of your needs.

As president of Panorama Orthopedics & Spine Center, member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Board of Councilors and a board member of the Colorado Orthopedic Society, Dr. Friermood is involved on a state and national level supporting patient advocacy.

Tom McNeil, MHA

CEO of Premier Dermatology

Tom McNeil is the CEO of Premier Dermatology, a physician owned dermatology group in Southwest Florida. Together with his management team, Tom has worked closely with Modernizing Medicine on
the development and enhancement of a host of EMA products. Tom has worked in healthcare administration for nearly 15 years, ranging from inpatient surgical departments to hospital-owned multispecialty practices, to independent specialty practices. Through this time, Tom has opened and combined several specialty practices. Navigating the often unique, political landscape of practice transitions requires attention to detail, constant communication, and an understanding of the interdependencies of practice functions.

Brett Coldiron, MD, FACP

Director of The Skin Cancer Center

Dr. Brett Coldiron graduated from medical school at the University of Kentucky, in Lexington, Kentucky in 1982.  He completed a residency in Internal Medicine at Cincinnati University Hospital
from 1982-1985, and a Dermatology residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas from 1985-1988.  Dr. Coldiron is board certified in Internal Medicine and Dermatology.  He went on to Chicago where he completed a Mohs Micrographic and Dermatologic Surgery fellowship at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois at Chicago.  Dr. Coldiron returned to Cincinnati after completing his fellowship and was Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Otolaryngology at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center from 1989-1992.  Dr. Coldiron is currently in private practice but maintains a Clinical Associate Professorship at the University of Cincinnati.  His current research interests are patient safety and the epidemiology of skin cancer.  He has published over 63 peer-reviewed articles and four book chapters.  He is past president of the American College of Mohs Surgery and is immediate past president of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Patricia Kennedy, COMT, COE, CPC, CPMA

Patricia J. Kennedy is a senior consultant with BSM’s Rose & Associates division, which specializes in Medicare reimbursement and compliance for the
specialty of ophthalmology. Ms. Kennedy conducts onsite chart audits, assists with Medicare reimbursement and compliance, and conducts training seminars. She serves as a guest speaker at national ophthalmology meetings, addressing documentation and compliance required to maintain Medicare compliance. Ms. Kennedy is a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT), Certified Ophthalmic Executive (COE), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA) and Certified Ophthalmic Professional Coder (COPC).

Amr Assal, PhD

Senior Director of Product Management

Amr Assal, PhD, is the Associate Vice President of Dermatology. Amr joined Modernizing Medicine in April 2014 with over 20 years of experience. Amr brings with him a reputation as an agent of change with high energy levels and a mix of
entrepreneurial, technical, leadership and strategic skills. Prior to Modernizing Medicine, Dr. Assal held product management positions at various Silicon Valley companies including Oracle, Digital Persona, PGP and Symantec.

Amr has a PhD in linear systems and control from UC Santa Barbara and attended Stanford University for a Masters in Computer Science with a focus on Knowledge-based Systems.

Jayne Engelking is the Manager of Advisory Services and is a Certified MIPS Health Professional (CMHP). She leads an EMAzing team of MIPS Advisors for both EMA and gMed while living and working out of Conifer, Colorado.

Johnathan Criss, MD

Medical Director of Ophthalmology

Dr. Jonathan Criss is the Medical Director of Ophthalmology. He is a board-certified ophthalmologist whose clinical practice encompasses comprehensive eye care including the medical and surgical evaluation and management of
cataract, glaucoma, corneal diseases, eyelid abnormalities and posterior segment pathology. Dr. Criss graduated Summa Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa from Yale University. He attended medical school at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and was the recipient of multiple merit scholarships. He performed his medical internship at Pennsylvania Hospital – University of Pennsylvania Medical System. Dr. Criss completed his residency in ophthalmology at Stanford University and was elected Chief Resident in his final year. Following four years in a thriving private practice including an adjunct appointment at New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, he joined Modernizing Medicine and practices at Florida Eye Microsurgical Institute in Boca Raton and Boynton Beach, Fla.

Dr. Criss has been an invited speaker at the American Academy of Ophthalmology and other meetings. He has authored several papers, book chapters and presentations on topics as varied as eye trauma, ocular tumors and resident surgical training. Dr. Criss is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, he is an Affiliate Assistant Professor of Biomedical Sciences at the Florida Atlantic University Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

Stuart A. Davis, MD, MHA

Orthopedics Team Lead

Dr. Stu Davis is the Orthopedics Team Lead at Modernizing Medicine. As an experienced orthopedic surgeon with an extensive computer background, he is a natural fit in his role to develop and assist in directing orthopedic content
for EMA™ for orthopedic surgery. Dr. Davis earned his undergraduate degree at Brigham Young University, his Master in Health Administration from Cornell University and his Doctor of Medicine from University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he also completed his residency. He completed his fellowship in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery at Southwest Orthopaedic Surgery Specialists.

Nadeem Dhanani, MD, MPH

Medical Director of Urology

Dr. Nadeem Dhanani is the Medical Director of Urology. Dr. Dhanani was the Chief of Urology at Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates in Boston, in addition to serving on faculty at Harvard Medical School and as a member of the Dana-Farber
Harvard Cancer Center. He was also on staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and the Director of Robotic Surgery at Mt. Auburn Hospital.

Dr. Dhanani has a specific interest in medical innovation and device design, in addition to his clinical focus on urologic oncology, and continues to collaborate with the Harvard School of Engineering and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition to being named to the Houston Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 list in 2013, Dr. Dhanani was awarded a Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) grant for prevention and early detection for bladder cancer research in collaboration with the Rice School of Engineering.

He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Duke University in Biology and Public Policy Studies, graduating cum laude. He earned his degree in Medicine at the University of Florida, followed by an internship in General Surgery and residency in Urological Surgery at the University of Texas – Houston and MD Anderson Cancer Center. He completed further subspecialty fellowship training in Urologic Oncology at the National Cancer Institute on the campus of the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Dhanani also holds a Master of Public Health degree from Johns Hopkins University.

Krisanne Fieldhouse

Krisanne has been with the organization for over 12 years with primary focus on operations and has overseen the GI RCM Division. Her past previous experience included managing implementations and as Product Manager of gPM has directly
contributed to her current role. gMed RCM's goal is not only to manage our client's revenue but to improve collections through technology and process reengineering.

Mihai Fonoage, PhD

Vice President of Engineering

Mihai Fonoage, PhD, manages, designs and implements EMR systems on mobile platforms, including both iOS and Android. With over 13 years of mobile development experience, his technical prowess has strongly contributed to
Modernizing Medicine’s success. Mihai has a PhD in Computer Science from Florida Atlantic University and was Modernizing Medicine’s first employee. He is a recipient of the Sun Sentinel's 2015 Top Workplace Professionals and the South Florida Business Journal’s 2014 40 Under 40 award.

Paul Gallogly, MD

Team Lead, Posterior Segment, Ophthalmology - MD

Paul Gallogly, MD, is Vitreoretinal Specialist and Partner at Retinal Care Specialists, LLP. Dr. Gallogly completed a fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases and Surgery at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute where he served as Chief Resident, Co-Director of
Ocular Trauma and a member of the Residency Selection Committee. He is a member of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Florida Society of Ophthalmology and American Society of Retina Specialists. He has been an active participant in a number of clinical studies and has published articles in distinguished medical journals. Dr. Gallogly is currently involved in multiple national research projects involving macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. In addition to his clinical responsibilities he serves as the Team Lead, Posterior Segment in Ophthalmology at Modernizing Medicine.

David A. Goldman, MD

Ophthalmology Team Lead, Anterior Segment

Dr. David Goldman is the Ophthalmology Team Lead for the Anterior Segment. In addition, he is founder of Goldman Eye in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Dr. Goldman received his Bachelor of Arts
cum laude and with distinction in all subjects from Cornell University and Doctor of Medicine with distinction in research from the Tufts School of Medicine, where he was also elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. This was followed by a medical internship at Mt. Sinai – Cabrini Medical Center in New York City. He then completed his residency and cornea fellowship at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Fla. Dr. Goldman served on the Young Physicians and Residents committee for ASCRS, as well as councilor for the ASCRS to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and was president of the Palm Beach County Ophthalmology Society for two years. During his tenure on faculty at the #1 eye hospital in the country, Dr. Goldman quickly became the second highest volume surgeon out of over forty faculty members. He has been awarded Top 150 Surgeons in the US by Premier Surgeon, Best Doctor, Top 40 Under 40 Most Influential Ophthalmologists in the World by The Ophthalmologist, one of the top twenty physicians in Palm Beach County by the Palm Beach County Medical Society and one of the top 300 premier surgeon innovators in refractive cataract surgery by Ocular Surgery News. He has lectured nationally and internationally on cataract and refractive topics. Dr. Goldman’s clinical practice encompasses medical, refractive and non-refractive surgical diseases of the cornea, anterior segment and lens. His research interests include advances in cataract and refractive technology, dry eye management and Internet applications of ophthalmology.

Patrick Herde

Associate Vice President, Ophthalmology

Patrick Herde is the Modernizing Medicine Senior Director of Product Management for EMA. He's a veteran in technology product management and marketing.
In his prior position at Watsco Ventures, Patrick
launched the e-com startup and scaled it to profitability. As an executive at, Patrick lead the growth of several large businesses: CBS Sports Mobile, CBS Fantasy Sports, and the Emmy Award winning NCAA March Madness on Demand.

Patrick started his career at Ziff-Davis, rose quickly through the ranks at a couple Silicon Valley dot-com startups during the boom days before pivoting into enterprise software at Documentum after the dot-com bust. Patrick later directed the first Intel Developer Forum in Brazil while living in São Paulo and working for the semiconductor giant.

Patrick holds a double MBA from the University of Texas at Austin and Brazilian business school Fundação Getúlio Vargas, a MA from the University of Louisville, and a BA from Centre College of Kentucky.

David Lehman, MD

Senior Medical Director for Otolaryngology

Dr. David Lehman is Senior Medical Director for Otolaryngology. Dr. Lehman completed his undergraduate studies at Yale University in 1995. After spending a year as a research diver for the University of Miami, he entered medical school at
the University of Florida, graduating as co-valedictorian in 2000. He then returned to his hometown of Miami to enter residency at University of Miami – Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Lehman has been a partner at Palm Beach Ear, Nose, and Throat Association since 2005, practicing as a general otolaryngologist – head and neck surgeon. His main practice interests lie in the field of head and neck surgery, specializing in surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands, and advanced skin cancers of the head and neck, including melanoma. He also has an interest in advanced endoscopic sinus surgery techniques, and is one of a small number of surgeons in Florida regularly performing endoscopic orbital decompression surgery for Graves’ eye disease. Dr. Lehman has served as the Chief of Surgery at Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, from 2008 – 2010, and remains very active in hospital practice.

Arnold G. Levy, MD

Modernizing Medicine Gastroenterology Advisor

Dr. Arnold Levy’s medical career spans 40 years, beginning in Montgomery County, Maryland, in 1977. In that time, he has cared for patients with a wide range of digestive disorders, performed thousands of endoscopic procedures devoted his
time to advancing digestive health care as a member of the National Digestive Diseases Advisory Board and the Board of the National Digestive Disease Information Clearing House and as the immediate past President of the Maryland Patient Care and Access Coalition. He also maintains an academic appointment as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

In 2006 as the healthcare provider environment was growing more complex, Dr. Levy joined forces with colleagues across the Washington Metropolitan area to lead discussions on how to address the challenges in their industry. In 2009 Capital Digestive Care was formed through the merger of seven diverse private practices and Dr. Levy was elected President and CEO where he served until 2017.

Dr. Levy obtained his BA in 1968 and MD in 1971 both with distinction and both from The George Washington University, in Washington, DC.

Jordan Miller, MD

Senior Medical Director of Dermatology

Dr. Jordan Miller is the Senior Medical Director of Dermatology and a board-certified dermatology. He received his Bachelor of Science from Brigham Young University, graduating magna cum laude. He received his medical degree from the Medical
College of Wisconsin, graduating with Honors in Research. His thesis focused on Confocal Imaging of the Skin. He also compete his residency in dermatology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Miller was one of the first EMA users and functioned as a beta tester for EMA Dermatology, starting in early 2010. He began consulting for Modernizing Medicine in July of 2011 and became the Medical Director of Dermatology in March 2012.

Dr. Miller practices dermatology in Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona. Dr. Miller's medical interests include medical and surgical treatment of skin cancer and acne therapy. He lives in Flagstaff with his wife and three children.

Elana M. Oberstein, MD, MPH

Senior Medical Director of Musculoskeletal

Dr. Elana M. Oberstein is Senior Medical Director of Musculoskeletal. A board certified internist with a subspecialty in Arthritis and Autoimmune Disease, Dr. Oberstein is also a certified clinical densitometrist (CCD) with expertise in the
diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. Dr. Oberstein received her Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from Harvard University. Dr. Oberstein graduated with research distinction from the University of Miami School of Medicine with a dual Medical Degree and Master of Public Health. She completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Jackson Memorial Hospital. She served as Chief Medical Resident for the Department of Medicine. Subsequently, she completed a fellowship in the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology. During her time at the University of Miami, Dr. Oberstein was inducted into the Iron Arrow society, the highest honor attainable at the University.

Dr. Oberstein now serves as a voluntary faculty member with the Division of Rheumatology and Immunology at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine.

Dr. Oberstein serves as a mentor to first and second year medical students. She is a member of the American Medical Association, American College of Physicians, Florida Society of Rheumatology, and the American College of Rheumatology (ACR). She has presented original scholarly work at the Annual Session of the ACR. She is also a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society.

Karen Richards

Associate Vice President of Gastroenterology

Karen Richards is the Associate Vice President of Gastroenterology for Modernizing Medicine and is responsible for the overall strategic direction and success of the gastroenterology (GI) vertical. Karen joined the Modernizing Medicine team
in October 2016.

Karen came to Modernizing Medicine with extensive experience in healthcare and business operations, including over 10 years directing the administration of a broad portfolio of healthcare programs and projects including academic and health services research, clinical trials, case study and clinical guideline development, clinical registries and outcomes measurement, regulatory reporting and compliance, accreditation and standards setting, and performance and process improvement programs for the American College of Surgeons (ACS), a large scientific and education-focused medical association. Karen created the initial business and marketing plans for the ACS National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP), a clinical registry based quality improvement program. The initiative grew from a grant-funded project into an internationally successful and highly regarded surgical quality improvement program with more than 600 hospitals participating around the world. Karen also successfully led the development of a unified accreditation program between the ACS and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons, which now collectively accredits and supports more than 700 participating bariatric surgical centers.

Karen relocated from Chicago to south Florida in 2014. Upon relocation, Ms. Richards utilized her strong background in operations, strategic planning, and process improvement as the Chief Operating Officer for a local non-profit entity for the two years prior to her joining Modernizing Medicine. Karen enjoys gardening, home improvement, biking, travel, riding around town in her golf cart, and spending time with her family.

Michael B. Rivers, MD

Director of EMA Ophthalmology

Dr. Michael B. Rivers is the Director of EMA Ophthalmology. In this role, he helps Modernizing Medicine evolve the ophthalmology platform by combining his years of experience as a board certified ophthalmologist and retina surgeon with
his expertise implementing and using the EMA™ EHR system at the Retina Group of Washington (RGW). Michael speaks with physician users, listens to their needs and communicates them to the development, customer success and other teams at Modernizing Medicine.

Michael was a practicing ophthalmologist, partner and board member at RGW in Washington, DC, from 1991 until 2017. In addition, he was a Surgical Retina and Vitreous Fellow at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics from 1989 to 1991.

No stranger to the intersection of technology and medicine, while he was a resident Michael wrote a computer database to help automate his clinic and manage patient information electronically. He is passionate about helping doctors be better doctors by diminishing the time and effort needed to run the business, and rather spend more time with patients.

The Georgetown Ophthalmology Department has honored Michael twice as Teacher of the Year. In addition, RGW recognized him for his exceptional efforts with the transition to their EHR system.

Michael obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from Princeton University and was elected to join Sigma Xi, the national Scientific Research Honor Society, and earned his MD from Weill Cornell Medical College. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at The New York Hospital Department of Ophthalmology.

Andrew Rosenthal, MD

Medical Director of Plastic Surgery

Dr. Andrew Rosenthal is the Medical Director of Plastic Surgery. He is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been practicing in Palm Beach County since 2004. Dr. Rosenthal attended undergraduate at Duke University, medical school at
Tulane University and completed his internship at University of Miami. He completed his plastic & reconstructive surgery training at the University of Michigan and a two-year fellowship in craniofacial research in an NIH core lab. Dr. Rosenthal also created a device that helps prevent positional head deformities in children.

In addition to his clinical practice, he is principal investigator on several FDA drug trials aimed at reducing human scarring through mRNA and protein inhibition, as well as a consultant for insurance companies for case review. Dr. Rosenthal is president of the Reed O. Dingman Society, the alumni society of the section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center..

Dr. Rosenthal has received local and national recognition from ABC, NBS, PBS, CBS, Sun Sentinel, Palm Beach Post and Boca Raton News particularly for his work with breast reconstruction and breast cancer fundraising. He is also a frequent guest on the Paul and Young Ron Show, the largest morning radio show in South Florida, as its “official plastic surgeon.”

Julie Servoss, MD, MPH

Medical Director of Gastroenterology

Dr. Julie Servoss is the Medical Director of Gastroenterology and is a board-certified gastroenterologist and internist. She received her bachelor of arts in human biology with honors from Stanford University, her medical degree from
Harvard Medical School and her masters in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Servoss completed her internship and residency in internal medicine and her fellowship in gastroenterology at the Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Servoss serves as the Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, and Associate Professor of Clinical Biomedical Science, in the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Dr. Servoss has also held numerous academic positions including as Clinical and Research Fellow in Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine and Assistant Regional Dean for Student Affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM), formerly at FAU. Her extensive research experience includes positions at the University of Southern California Medical School, the University of California at San Francisco, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Stanford University and Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Servoss has published numerous articles and abstracts in top-tier journals and has presented her work at various research and medical meetings.

Dr. Servoss is currently a member of the Florida Medical Association, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the American Gastroenterological Association. Among the awards Dr. Servoss has received include the American Medical Women’s Association’s “Exceptional Mentor Award” and the “Faculty Appreciation Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Education of Students” and “Excellence in Teaching Awards” from the UMMSM, formerly at FAU. Dr. Servoss is licensed to practice medicine in Florida and volunteers her gastroenterology services at the Caridad Center in Boynton Beach, Fla., which provides care to the underserved.

Jason Weisstein MD

Medical Director of Orthopedics

Jason Weisstein, MD, MPH, graduated valedictorian from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He completed his surgical internship and orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of California - San Francisco and
fellowship training at the University of Washington. Dr. Weisstein specializes in limb salvage surgery and restoring function in limbs in jeopardy from arthritis, tumors or other diseases. He was an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington, specializing in hip and knee reconstruction, and bone and soft tissue tumors.
